Chinatown History

Long ago, as far back as 1912, when the Chinatown community moved from the Southern edge of downtown Chicago to here at Cermak Road. From there on, the population grew until 90 percent of it consisted of Asians. The Chinatown community flourished even though there were numerous issues. The lack educational material and greenery brought forth the arrival of Ping Tom park and a new Library. The Chinatown community have prevailed each time a challenge arrives with the help of its residence, lovers, and supporters.

New Challenges

The top 3 challenges that the Chinatown community faces today are safety, cleanliness, and transportation. There was survey given out to the people of Chinatown enquiring on what their concerns were. The majority of them thought of safety as a concern where they are too afraid to walk out at night. Most residence and visitors thought that there were a lot of garbage in the streets with very limited public garbage can. There were also many complains about the difficulty of transportation into Chinatown either by biking or by a vehicle. The confusing threeway roads is indeed an issue for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers. Furthemore, the lack of parking space renders vehicle drivers insane due to them having to park very far away from Chinatown.
